Abstract: |
Compared to open-loop control systems, closed-loop feedback systems can provide higher accuracy, better stability, faster speed and more robustness to uncertainties. As a result, feedback control methods have been extensively employed in industry. In contrast, feedback mechanisms remain to be developed for sleep medicine diagnostic and treatment methods.
Based on the framework of feedback control theory, the goal of this report is to discuss the innovative roles that can be played by the high-tech industry for sleep medicine. By formulating maintaining sleep quality as a closed-loop control problem, special attentions will be given to the selection of controlled variables, the development of sensors, the interpretation of feedback signals and the design of control laws. We will also discuss the potential impacts of new technologies such as cloud computing, big data and machine learning on sleep medicine. Finally, we want to address the inappropriateness for high-tech industry to directly adapt the conventional consumer electronic business model to sleep medicine market.
