Abstract: Postpartum women typically bear the brunt of sleep disturbance due to the interplay of physiological influences and socio-cultural factors related to women’s roles. A national survey in the US showed that 48% of postpartum women reported receiving no help with night-time infant care. Development of an infant’s sleep-wake rhythm that is entrained to the light-dark cycle has long been a classic topic in infant care. Failure to develop such rhythms creates tremendous stress for parents and caregivers. This talk will cover some of the research findings from our previous quantitative, qualitative, and methodologic studies in postpartum women and their infants.
