Abstract:
Sleep apnea (SA) is prevalent among stroke patients. It contributes to stroke onset and poor prognosis due to intermittent hypoxia (IH)-induced sympathetic hyperactivity, elevated blood pressure, disrupted baroreflex sensitivity, and fragmented sleep. We employed an animal model to replicate the pathological process observed in patients with SA following a stroke and revealed the relationship between changes in physiological parameters and poststroke prognosis. SA treatment following stroke not only significantly alleviated elevated blood pressure standard deviation (BPSD) levels, poor sleep quality, unstable sleep patterns, and sleep disruptions but also ameliorated sensorimotor and cognitive function while mitigating brain damage. Through stepwise analysis, BPSD and sleep patterns were identified as key factors, potentially serving as markers for assessing the effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and predicting poststroke prognosis in patients with SA. These findings enhance understanding of the poststroke evolution of physiological parameters with SA treatment and their effect on prognosis. We highlighted the importance of long-term adherence to CPAP therapy for maintaining autonomic activity and promoting better sleep, thereby contributing to improved stroke management in patients with SA.
