Abstract:
Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), ranging from primary snoring to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is an important health concern in children. Intermittent hypoxemia, sleep fragmentation, and altered autonomic function may contribute to neurocognitive and behavioral problems, cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction, impaired growth, and reduced quality of life.
This section elaborates the impact of pediatric SDB on multi-systems and highlights the transition toward precision medicine. Advances in polysomnographic phenotyping, upper airway evaluation, biomarkers, imaging, and individualized risk assessment facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric SDB. Although adenotonsillectomy remains a cornerstone of treatment, positive airway pressure, weight management, anti-inflammatory therapy, orthodontic interventions, and multidisciplinary care may benefit selected patients. A better understanding of disease heterogeneity and multisystem consequences is essential for early recognition, personalized treatment, and improved long-term outcomes in children with SDB.
