Abstract:
Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is far more than snoring. It is a modifiable risk factor with lasting consequences for craniofacial growth, behavior, cognition, and cardiometabolic health if left unaddressed. Yet SDB remains widely underdiagnosed, often dismissed as a phase children will outgrow, while the window for effective, low-morbidity intervention quietly closes. This lecture presents a case-driven framework for early identification and management of pediatric SDB, seen through the lens of the pediatric dentist as one of the frontline gatekeepers in the child's airway health journey. Drawing on clinical experience as a pediatric dentist working alongside otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, speech-language pathology, and myofunctional therapy, the talk will explore how airway-focused screening can be integrated into everyday clinical practice, the craniofacial and functional red flags that should not be overlooked, and how timely referral and coordinated, team-based treatment from tongue-tie release and myofunctional therapy to orthodontic airway expansion and ENT evaluation can meaningfully redirect a child's growth and developmental trajectory.
